Pomerol: Ready to Enjoy

Unique Bordeaux

  • Located in the eastern section of Bordeaux, Pomerol is situated in the Libournais. Pomerol is a small appelation of roughly 2000 acres under vine on a gravel bank, with only 20 meters of elevation change.
  • Pomerol's theme is supply and demand; with demand far exceeding supply for this prestigious and quality-driven appellation.

Ready to Drink Vintages

  • The wines featured on this list are deemed “drinkers’ vintages”. These vintages may have not scored as high as their iconic-rated counterparts due to less than ideal weather conditions.
  • However, these wines are created by famed wine producers that impart their experience, expertise and wisdom in every bottle, regardless of vintage.
  • Wines from drinkers’ vintages tend to demand lower prices than their cellar-worthy equivalents and are intended to be consumed far earlier. Enjoy these wines today.

Vintage Ratings*

2006: 89 pts.

  • Top vineyards made balanced reds.

2007: 86 pts.

  • Aromatic and lightly fruity. Fine tannins.

2008: 88 pts.

  • After a difficult growing season, late September weather allowed early-ripening Merlot to catch up. Right Bank wines fleshier than Left Bank.

2011: 91 pts.

  • Pomerols generally fresh and ripe. Solid vintage that should age fairly nicely.

2013: 86 pts.

  • Merlot generally soft and forward but prime spots on limestone and gravel handled late rains better. Cabernet Franc also performed well, bolstering Pomerol. Generally more consistent than on Left Bank but still for early consumption.

2014: 91 pts.

  • A good spring was followed by a grey, humid summer, with slightly more rainfall than on the Left Bank. Merlot solid, but wines with Cabernet Franc the sweet spot as well-drained gravel soils were favored over clay.

2017: 93 pts.

  • Warm, dry growing season, with spring frost hitting low-lying areas particularly hard. Cloudy July kept wines on the fresh, pure side, with good acidity and modest tannins. Pomerols are fleshy and forward.

Notes.

  • 1. A Collector's Appellation

Collectability in Pomerol is among the highest in the world, with blue-chip offerings such as Petrus, LaFleur, and Le Pin. These wines are some of the most sought-after in all of Europe. FTWC has thousands of live offers from the iconic producers of Pomerol, spanning over dozens of vintages.

  • 2. Small Footprint

A small appellation of roughly 800 hectares under vine, Pomerol wines predominately consist of Merlot grown in clay soils. The Merlot from Pomerol is famed as one of the greatest expressions of the grape worldwide. Cabernet Franc is the second most important grape in Pomerol blends.

  • 3. New-found Fame

Pomerol’s fame is young, with major global notoriety following the legendary 1982 vintage. Today, however, Pomerol’s wines are revered throughout the world, and are often inaccessible to mass-market consumers.

  • 4. Quality Driven

Although one of the benchmark appellations in all of Bordeaux; many make comparisons between Pomerol and Burgundy due to the small area and quality-driven producers.

  • 5. High Praise

The average ratings by critics for Pomerol wines are among the highest in all of Bordeaux.
